Peace. Everyone longs for it—peace with others, peace within our families, peace in life, world peace. Jesus, You are my Prince of Peace. Your truth tells me, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6 NIV).
But how do I handle my anxiety from the unexpected phone call in the middle of the night? Or the pain I see on my child’s face when heartbreak strikes? Or when my feelings of anger when someone hurts me?
You calm the storm inside of me by whispering Your truth to my soul, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27 NIV). You remind me –
- To experience Your peace I must believe You are who You say You are and will do what You say You will do. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NIV).
- As long as my faith and focus are on You, I will have access to Your peace. I can weather any storm if I hold on to the hand who controls it. It’s when I lose sight of You and instead concentrate on my feelings or the whirling circumstances around me that I lose my peace, and panic instead.
- If my roots are deep in Your truth, I am better equipped to not only withstand the flood of anxiety, but sail above it in Your perfect peace. I can simply turn to You, who can and will guard my heart and mind with Your peace that transcends all understanding. I cling to Your truth and promises in my life: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7 NIV). Lord, I trust in You. You are my Prince of peace.
